Genetic resources

Today, preservation of genetic resources is regarded as an important need for our society. The Nicotiana collection of the Tobacco Institute meets this need. This gene bank contains more than 1100 accessions and is an essential tool for tobacco breeders. Every tobacco type is represented, Virginia (flue-cured), Burley, Dark air-cured and others.

Apart from the simple collection of new varieties (or less often species) and their conservation, the proper maintenance of a collection consists of its evaluation, in genetic and agronomic characterisation of these accessions and recording of this information in a data base.
